I’ve been involved with all aspects of music and sound production since leaving full time education with a degree in Philosophy. I write, produce, play and programme many styles of music and songs. I’ve also had considerable experience recording, mixing, relooping, dubbing and doing sound design and foley work for film. I’ve recorded orchestras, opera singers, hypnotists, voiceovers, talking books, Mbira bands, and produced music styles from death metal to traditional folk and chillout to hip hop.
I have been lucky enough to work with such talents as Chris Whitten (Paul McCartney, Dire Straits), Tim Bradshaw (David Gray, John Mayer), Big Jim Sullivan (David Bowie, Frank Zappa, George Harrison, Tom Jones), Maya Magub (Bono, Paul McCartney, London Mozart Players), (Julian Lennon, The Waterboys, Aimee Mann, Sinead O’Connor), and Alex Heffes.
Alex Heffes is an Ivor Novello award winner film composer scoring the BAFTA winning Touching the Void, Oscar winning movies One Day in September and The Last King of Scotland, and was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score for his work on Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
Some other other notable cooperations
I have also worked with Alex James of Blur, Jeremy Stacey (King Crimson, Sheryl Crow, Noel Gallagher), Alvin Gibbs (Iggy Pop, UK Subs), Peter Sarstedt, Keith Boyce (The Heavy Metal Kids), director Jamie Payne (Dr Who, Ashes to Ashes, Survivors), the late veteran cinematographer/director and Honorary Oscar winner Jack Cardiff (The Red Shoes, A Matter of Life and Death, Black Narcissus, The African Queen, Girl on a Motorcycle, Rambo: First Blood Part II) and Mary McCartney.
I even made a festive single with punk poet Dr John Cooper Clarke as special guest!
I’ve produced two albums of kids’ songs, “Little Acorns Volumes 1 & 2”, and these are available for sale on Amazon.
With Alex Heffes (Ivor Novello award winner and Golden Globe nominated film composer of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Touching the Void, The Last King of Scotland, and Roots) I cowrote and sung the theme tune to Granada TV’s mini series “Stan The Man” starring John Thomson. Thanks to Alex, I’ve also had a brush with Hollywood when I provided the vocals for a cover of “Born to be Alive” for the 2009 movie version of “State of Play” (credited to The Flugal Horns), produced by Flood (U2, Nine Inch Nails, New Order, Nick Cave, Brian Eno).
Oxford University Press
Since 2002 I’ve composed hundreds of songs for Oxford University Press ELT (English Language Training) educational projects for the foreign market. One project I supplied music for, “Three in a Tree” book and multimedia package, won an ELTon (English Language teaching Innovation Award) from the British Council in 2005.
I also wrote the music for an animated CDRom phonics course, Oxford Reading Tree eSong Birds, scripted by the author of The Gruffalo and much more, the immensely successful Julia Donaldson. This is available from Amazon in CD format.
I’m available for all kinds of music production work no matter how large or small.
